  1. Even though basketball came easily to
  2. Hakeem after arriving in Houston, he did
  3. have a lot to learn about the United States.
  4. Back home, Nigerians are raised to
  5. respect their elders and be polite and
  6. courteous at all times. As a young boy,
  7. when Hakeem was introduced to an older
  8. person, he was expected to bow out of
  9. respect. So when he was introduced to
  10. someone new in the U.S., he would bow
  11. out of respect for that person. But University
  12. of Houston teammates Clyde Drexler and
  13. Benny Anders explained to Hakeem that
  14. bowing was not required in the United
  15. States. Still, to this day, Hakeem remains
  16. one of the most courteous players in the
  17. game -- and one of the most respected.
