- Even though basketball came easily to
- Hakeem after arriving in Houston, he did
- have a lot to learn about the United States.
- Back home, Nigerians are raised to
- respect their elders and be polite and
- courteous at all times. As a young boy,
- when Hakeem was introduced to an older
- person, he was expected to bow out of
- respect. So when he was introduced to
- someone new in the U.S., he would bow
- out of respect for that person. But University
- of Houston teammates Clyde Drexler and
- Benny Anders explained to Hakeem that
- bowing was not required in the United
- States. Still, to this day, Hakeem remains
- one of the most courteous players in the
- game -- and one of the most respected.
